Age Specials. (Per Manapouri, at the Bluff.) THE RECIDIVISTES QUESTION. ANNEXATION DESPATCHES. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) London, May 14. The meeting which it was proposed to hold in London to protest agaiust the transportation oi French criminals to the islands in the South Pacific, has been postponed for the present in consequence of negotiations on the subject, which are to be resumed between the British and French Governments. Jt is also hoped that the visit to Paris of Sir F. D. Bell, the Agent-General of New Zealand, will have some good effect, he having", prior to his departure, expie?sed his determination to interview the French Premier on the subject. The Bill introduced into the House of Commons by the Channel Tunnel Company, Limited, has been rejected. The object of the measure was to obtain power to construct a tunnel under the English Chennel between England and France. Earl Derby bas forwarded a despatch in conneclion with the annexation of New Guinea to the Governors ot the various Australian colonies represented at the recent Sydney Convention. The contonts of the despatch have been disclosed to the Agents-General, but they have been forbidden to cable contents or a summary of them to thePiemiers of their respective colonies. May 16. Lord St*. Leonards, who was committed for trial by the magistrates on the Bth instant for an indecent assault on one of hi« servants, bail being refused, has demanded to be tried by his peers.
