LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Queensland Rifle Association has resolved to invite the members of the N.S.W., Victorian, Tasmanian, and New Zealand Associations to take part in the forthcoming Brisbane rifle matches. Mr Snelson is inviting tenders for the purchase of some very valuable businesses in the Square, fuller particulars of which will be found in advartisement elsewhere. Writes the Welling morning paper :— " Citizens may be congratulated Hpon the presumption that within a few weeks' time the Wainuiomata scheme will be an accomplished fact, and one which may reasonably be expected to last for the next hundred years. Decorating bald heads is the latest freak of fashion across the Atlantic. At a recent New York party three bald gentlemen appeared with elaborate pictures painted on their bare scalps, one choosing a copy of Meissonuier, another a battle piece, and a third a group of fish. In his speech at Auckland, the Premier said the number of landowners in the colony was upwards of 70,000. Roughly speaking, every other man in the colony ia a freeholder.
Tin": steamer Victory did not escape without the usual complement of stowaways when she left England. Although a boatload of them were sent ashore at Plymouth, no less than seven were subsequently discovered on board. Ira- , mediately after the berthing of _ the steamer at Wellington, they were given , in charge. Rnmours of a painful and suspicious character have lately been in circulation in this city, (says the Post), and have within the last few days assumed a very definite and precise form, names and figures in connection with some alleged improper dealings with trust fuuds by an executor being freely given. It is said that some extraordinary disclosures are iminent. We understand that Mr Haybittltj has leased those offices lately occupied by Mr Wahurton which he intends converting into a shop to which he will remove shortly from his present premises and open up in a larger way in the jewellery business. A novelty in riding gear might have been seen on the Rangitikei Road a few days ago. The saddle was composed of a piece of sackiug laid across the horse's back and on either side a cord suspended with loops for stirrups, and a short rope for reins completing the rig-out. The rider seemed quite happy and comfortable. Foxton had better look to its laurels. The township of Shannon, now being formed in that vicinity by the Wellington Manawatu Railway Company, bids fair from its position and the nature of the surrounding country to grow into & formidable rival to Foxton ; and it is not altogether beyond the bounds of possibility that at some not far distant date announcements may be made to the effect that the ss So-and-So will leave for Shannon at such an hour, " calling at Foxton should sufficient inducement offer." There is, we (Post) understand, a good wharf at Shannon, and the river is said to be easily navigable.
