THE KAWHIA EPISODE. f UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, 27. The Government have received information respecting the destruction of beacons at Kawhia by the natives. Mr Butler of the Native Office, who was seat tp make enquiries found that the beacons placed $y Captain Fairchild recently were removed and so much broken that it would take some considerable time to repair and re«F§cs £hem. One ofth'e two chiefs Who wore, cqpeerned m tho destruction of the beacons had gone $q tihoe with Tawhaio, the other waa still at Kawhia, and when M.r Butler called on him to assist at once m repairing and re-erecting the beacons, he answered that he could not do so without instructions from Tawhaio, Toeae two chiefs are the same as wore concerned m pulling up pegs along the road from Kawhia around to Aotea harbor. It is believed that m bith instances the chiefs acted at the instance of T^vthaio and some of his advisers belonging to the Waikato tribe. The beacons have not yet been re»erected f
