The Waitara Survivors.
The Auckland Star's. London corres pondent writes : —The Huranui's pas« senders continned their journey (as it was thought they would) m the Otaki, but the s irvivors of the Wa'tura have so far made no move. Mrs Cheek is winding up her husband's affairs m England, and the other day an application to the ' Probate Court to presume his death was at once gran'ed. Tho. young sailor Arnold, who saved this lady's life at the tisk of his own, dnly received the Humane Society's medal, but it is whispered down at the Sailors' Home that Mrs C. herself has not acted very generously. The sto y goes (I give it to you as 'twas to tne") that after waiting some time tor the lady to take the Initiative, several friends of Arnold's went to her and asked what she meant to do. "Oh 1 give him a soverign, I suppose," was the reply, and positively this is all Arnold got* Mind I don't pretend to vouch for the yarn". Versions of it have appeared m the Referee and inj>ther London papers, but that does not necessarily ensure vejraoity.
