SHOOTIING LICENSES.
<ome time ago it was announced m the telegraphic columns of the newspapers that the season for shooting game would commence on 30th March. . Subsequently it transpired that the proclamation only referred to the District' of Wellington, and that it bad been telegraphed m error. Many people were, however, misled by tbe information, and amoDg the nunibei (says the Auckland Herald) Messrs C. H. S. George and Hudson Williamson, who reiied upon the telegram, and. made arrangements fora trip to the Waikato. The 30th was spent m the vicinity of Mercer, where some good sport was obtained, but the police put a stop to the " unlawful shooting," and took proceedings against the gentlemen for breach of the Animals Protection Act. TLe caßes are now pending, and a special meeting of the Acclimatisation Society has been held to consider letters from Messrs George and Williamson, asking that the proceedings should be withdrawn. After some discussion it ; was resolved that the Acclimatisation Society had no power under the Act to lay an informa* tion or interfere with the progress of the law m cases commenced by the police. It is to be hoped that next year, all this annoy ance and uncertainty will be done away, with by fixing the opening of the shooting season on one specified ,date for the whole North Island. ' '"*
