CLASSIFICATION OF CONVICTS.

The system of classification of convicts, now to ba made general throughout the colony by the regulations published m the last issue of the Gazette, has, we learn from the Wellington Post, previously been m foriw m the Lyttelton Gaol only. Under the -old Provincial system, almost every gaol had its Own particular scheme of management. This diversity will now be swept away, and one uniform system introduced throughout the colony. In regard to the "cutting off " of the prisoners' tobacco, it may be mentioned the prohibition already exists m a few gaols m tbe colony, and is most rigidly insisted upon m English prisons. In many cases the restriction will be more severely felt than the deprivation ot a meal a d&y.
