Idiocy and Lunacy.
Professor Hugo the i^min^nt physiognomist, m a letter to the Wanganui Her Id maintains tha 4 ; "the stipes of mania lunacy are not co-existing with a low, but a very high nervous organization. In many countries on the Continent, the number of patients belonging to tlie educated classes, compared with those of the uneducated, are hb se to one. Among all savage races insanity is very rare. He therefore infers that the number of patients a Mount View (the Wellington asylum) proves progression and mental energy. He further contends that idiots never become maniacs, for the simple reason that their mental faculties are too weak, for normal energy. He thus concludes ;— lf this view is correot the manager of the Manawatu Times can rejoice at the thought that there is no fear of him ever becoming a lunatic. In conclusion let me advise this journalist to think before he writes, or, if incapable of thinking, keep silent, and I can safely nay that if he chooses the latter the general public will not lose much.
