A peculiar case was heard to-day at the Police Court, being a charge by Mr Qain, manager of'the benevolent institute, against Mr Hudson of using abusive and insulting language. At just about the time of the recent in* quiry as to tho Benevolent Institute control, Hudson deposed to having seea Quin the worse for liquor, but che medical evidence was that Quin suffered from locomotor ataxy, through which it might be imagined he was suffering from drink. A few days ago, Hudson, meeting Q-un m the street, asked him, " How was his locomotor ataxy ?" which Quin considered as intended to be as an insult, hence the action. The case was dismissed, the Magistrate saying thsre was no likelihood of Hudson repeating such conduct. • The council adopted the. recommendations of the gas committee to^cighti that the application from Messrs Mills & Co., Christchurch, for permission to erect posts and wires m the streets of the city, for the purpose of introducing the electric light system, be declined $ the science of electric lighting being still m a udimentary state.
