An important judgment has been delivered m the Supreme Court with the effect of upsetting the decision ot the jury m the case, Brown v. the Board of Land and Works. Brown, an engine-driver, was hurt owing to the defect of an engine causing the accident. The jury rewarded £2000 damages. Judge Williams and the Chiflf Justice upset tne verdict, on the ground that the accident was caused by the default of the locomotive foreman, who was a fellow-servant of Brown, and therefore the department was not liable. Water continues to flood the mine at i Creswick, rendering it impossible to examine the workings. Eight cases of typhoid fever at i Sandhurst have been traced to the uncleanly state of a piggery m the vicinity of a hoase. Sydney, Jan. 3. The loss of life at the wreck of the New England amounts to ten. At the magisterial inquiry strong comments were made on the cowardice of the pilot boat's crew, who, with the pilot, refused to attempt to save life, although three foreigners m a shaky boat, saved many. The attention of the Govern" •ment has been drawn to the conduct; of the pilot.
