A duel forced on Captain Emmerich by a court of honour, took place between himself aid a Jew named Herr Mever, at Warburg. Meyer was killed by Emmerich. Von Flotow, the author of the opera of Martha, has been stricken with blindness. * B'lve dragoons of Odessa were con ' i demued to 15 years m the mines i for engaging m riots against the Jews. The Danish artic exploring vessel Dejemphna appears to have drifted into the Kara Sea, to the south of Nova Zembla. It is proposed to organise an expedition, with 10 to 15 sledges and 115 reindeers, to search for the vessel., Laresen, who was with the Jeannette party, will accompany the expedition. It is calculated that embezzlements and robberies, both private and official, m Russia daring the year amount to 260,000,000 roubles. The Czar proposes visiting- Copenhagen, London, and possibly Paris, m spring. An anti-terrorist association, the object of which is to oppose the projects of the Nihilists, has been formed m St. Petersburg, and branches have been established at Paris, Nice, Geneva, Zurich, London, Berlin, Konisberg, Bucharest, and Constantinople. The Spanish Red Book contains a note m which Spain demands that the United States should not have the right of exclusive intervention m connection with the Panama Canal. Richard O'Shaugnessy, M.P. for Limerick, is spoken of as Under-Sec-retary for Ireland. The dispute between the Isle of Skye landl ids and their tenants is about to be settled by arbitration. The Prince of Wales has requested that Brookshaw, sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude for sending him a threatening letter, may have his sentence reduced. Justice O'Brien, speaking m Dublin on December 4th, said that, owing to the increase of offences, the trade of Dublin was gradually decaying, and those able to do so were giving up their businesses and fleeing from the city as though it was infected with the plague. The first arrest under the curfew clause of the Repression Act was made m Dublin on December 11th. The prisoner is believed to be a companion of the murderers of Detective Cox. De Brazza'B expedition m Africa includes 300 negroes, who will embark at Senegal. It is officially reported to the Go* vernment on November 24th that widespread distress is feared m Ireland this winter. The districts most affected are — Sligo, Ballina, Swineford, tbe greater portion of Galway West, Clare, and Connaught. Remittances from America have been falling off, being exhausted by the Land League. Up to the 15 th November the applications under the Arrears of Rent Ace had reached 14,167. Several Churches m the Department of Mai ne-ets Loire were robbed on December Ist. From the Church at Fon tre vault seven valuable paintings were taken.
