THE WRECK OP THE NEW ENGLAND. (%y telegraph,) (united press association.) Sydney Another appalling wreck occurred on December 27. The New England a steamer engaged m the C.arence river trade, left the Grafton Wharf on Wednesday afternoon for Sydney, having cm board 53 people all told, including a number of passengers, She proceeded down the Clarence river, and passing outwards struck the bar with tremendous force, aud subsequently drifted to the North Spit, where the seas completely washed over her, and rendered the vessel a total wreck. The passengers were panic stricken. Both they and tli9 crew sought every available means nf escape ; some took refuge m the rigging and others m different parts of the steamer, but many were washed overboard by the waves, which from time to time swept over the vessel. Two boatloads of people were landed, but it was found that a large number of those qn board the steamer had been washed overboard. The schooner 0, Walker made two trips to the wreck, and saved several of the passengers. The pilot boat also went out, but did not venture near the wreck on account of the tremendous sea that was running. The disaster caused the greatest consternation m Grafton. The racehorse Proctor dropped dead recently. It had been bought by the Hon. John Enlisc for twelve hundred guineas . Melboubne. At the Sandhurst Assizes m 1880, two lads named Punch and Oorbis, were sentenced to death for an alleged criminal assault. The sentence was commuted to ten years' penal servitude. The girl concerned has now confessed that they were not guilty, and the prisoners have been set at liberty; The Singer Sewing Machine Company have presented each widow of the Ureswick disaster with a sewing machine, A fire attended by fatal results occurred at Wi liamstown on Christmas Day. A woman named Cox was burned to death. On Christmas Day Michael Leonard Oakleigh shot a man known as Harry Ivison.
