TROOPS FOR NEW ZEALAND.
A deputation, for the purpose of obtaining information as to the additional assistance to be rendered to the colony of New Zealand, had an interview with the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies on the 24th of Sept., at the Colonial-Office. The deputation consisted of the following colonists: —Mr. David Graham, Mr. W. S. Graham, Mr. Hort, Mr. Nathan, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Kelham, Mr. Williamson, Mr. Fell, and Mr. John Mon’ison, agent for the General Government of New Zealand. We learn from a lettr received from Mr. Johnstou that the deputation were assured that another regiment should be sent out but whether from England or India was not decided upon. The Army and Navy Gazette recommends the immediate despatch of a seasoned regiment from either one or other of the above countries.—Advertiser, Nov. 28. ♦
We are informed that an offer has been made by the Superintendent of Marlborough to give a subsidy to the Wonga Wonga, provided she calls at Picton twice a month; whatever may be the final decision of the Company respecting the offers that have been made to them, we trust that Wanganui will not be deprived of the steamer’s services. She leaves for Napier this afternoon with the English mail Advertiser , Nov. 28. The steamer Lyttelton arrived here under canvas last night, on her way to Lyttelton. She has been 15 months from London, having called at several ports on her way out.— ld. The Robert Lowe, having on board the first (head-quarter) division of the service companies of the 2nd Battalion, 14th Foot, consisting of five companies, has sailed from Queenstown for New Zealand. The following officers have embarked with this division: —Colonel Sir James E. Alexander; Major W. Douglas; Captains Edward W. Saunders, Alexander Strange, W. A. Dobie, A. Gresson, and Ivor M’lver; Lieuts. Kanrick, Hill, G. H. Cope; James Anderson (instructor of musketry), John
33. Frizell, and James S. Johnson: Ensigns, John Lawrence, Charles Curtis, Cecil M'Mahon, and Aubrey Lisle Patton; Surgeon John E. Carte, M. B.; Assistant Surgeon A. T. Carbery; Lieutenant and Adjutant J. Glancy, and Quarter-master James Spry. The Boanerges, sailing vessel, received on board, at Queenstown, on the 10th instant, the second division, five companies of the above regiment, the depot of which lias joined the 18th Depot Battalion at Fernioy, from the Curragli Camp. The Boanerges transport, 1,440 tons, having on board the second and last division of the Service Companies of the second battalian 14th Foot, consisting of five companies, sailed from Queenstown on the 10 th instant, for New Zealand. The following are the names of the officers and number of men embarked:—Major John Dwyer, Commanding; Capts., W. Heywood, D. R. Barnes, R. Harman, and Brevet Major M. Deeper; Lieutenants, R. A. Furneaux, J. S. Phelps, H. Harrington, and J. T. Edwards; Ensigns, W. Butler, W. J. Willis, H. J. Harrington; Paymaster, J. C. V. Minuet, and Assistant Surgeon T. Bennett; 21 sergeants, 7 drummers, 455 rank and file.— ld. Military-. —We understand that orders have been received from Head-quarters, to prepare barrack accommodation for three companies of the 14th Regt., which are to be stationed at Wellington. The women belonging to the detachment of the 65th Regt., stationed at Napier, have received instruction to hold themselves in readiness to-proceed to Wellington, where they are to remain until the Regiment proceeds to England. The out detachments of the 65th Regt., are under orders to proceed to Taranaki, immediately on their being relieved by detachments of the 14th Regt. The object contemplated by these intended movements is, that the whole of the troops accustomed to the country will then be concentrated at the seat of war, and when hostilities cease, they will be in readiness to proceed at once to England.—lndependent.
