RIWAKA.
The social and dance held in MrThomas Macmahon's Kiln last Friday evening in aid of the funds of the "Valley Cricket Club, was, as we predicted, a great success, both in point of numbers, the excellence of the refreshments and the sociability of all who attended. Dancing was commenced at 8 o'clock, Mr D. Mickell efficiently acting as ' M.C, and Mr Ralph Bate furnishing capital dance music, as usual, the extras being played by several ladies. About 70 persons were present and the floor was filled for every dance. During th& proceedings songs were sung by -Mrs Goodyer (3), Miss H. Banfield, Messrs L. Budden, Kerwen (3) and Y. Rowlings (%), some of the vocalists being encored. A stump speech was given by Mr Fairey, which was well received. An excellent supper was handed round and the assemblage broke up shortly after two o'clock.
The Golden Bay Argus of last Thursday says :—The preseut time tables of the local steamers are not giving satisfaction to the business men and public (f this district, and a public meeting is called for next Monday to endeavour to effect a change. The usefulness of both the steamers appears to be. detracted from by the practice of both running on the same days of the week, and an alteration of this system is being sought by interested, parties. After an address on ''The Personality of Satan," an audience in Christchurch the other day actually rose up and sang the hymn, '"We shall know each other better." The total value of the exports at the port of Oamaru during the quarter ended 31st March was £115,923 and for the corresponding quarte" of 19<">2, £71,521. No gold nugget has yet been found to exceed in size the one found in New South Wales in the year 1872. This nugget weighed 640 pounds and was valued at about £30,000. Mr Leslie Reynolds C.E., has, the West Coast. Times says, been busy siiico his arrival visiting the different parts of the town taking levels and making a generol inspection in connection with the drainage scheme. It is reported that if John Duthie, one of the members for Wellington, is chosen as Leader of the Opposition in : the House of Representatives, he will I at once table a motion of no-confidence jin the Government. On what particuI lar action of the Ministry he will base his attack has not been indicated but j it is expected that it will be finance.
