EMPIRE DAY.
Residents of Motueka were favored with fine weather to celebrate Empire Day. As previously notified the centre of attraction was the Borough school grounds, where, at ten o'clock a goodly number of parents and scholars assembled to salute the. flag and to take part in the subsequent proceedings. Mr W. J. Moffatt, chairman of the School Committee, explained the reason of the gathering and called upon His Worship the Mayor to give an address, at the conclusion of which the Union Jack was hoisted by Master M. Staples and the National, Anthem sung. Patriotic speeches were also delivered by Revs. Thos. Johnston and Reader and Mr H. Everett, which were listened to with deep attention. The New Zealand Ensign was then run up, two verses of Bracken's Anthem sung, followed by hearty cheers for the King, I the Old Settlers (founders of the Colony of New Zealand, especially referred to by Mr Wratt) and the New Zealand Parliament. The proceedings were brought to a close by the Chairman thanking those present for their attendance.
