The councillors of Maryborough (Vic) are at war with their chief, the mayor, over the payment of an account. Recently the Governor visited Maryborough, and was heartily welcomed and suitably entertained. The account against the mayor or the council or both or either for entertaining his Excellency was presented at the meeting last week. The amount was .£ll 4s 7d, of which .£3 3s was part cost of address of welcome, £3 for drags, .£3 18s 6d for decorations and 23s for decorations at the park. Cr Minners was "surprised" and so.apparently were the other councillors, that the mayor did not pay the amount out of his allowance, as previous mayors had done. A resolution was proved that the mayor be called upon to pay, but the mayor said he had given warning that he was not going to spend his allowance on entertaining the Governor. The affair, he said, was brought toi ward to belittle him, but a chorus of voices denied the allegation. Thereupon the councillors resolved to subscribe the money, and the mayor offered to join in. When it came to taking a cold plunge pocket-, wards in search of hard cash, a tacti cal retreat was effected in a postponement uutil next meeting.
