Mr J. Penney, of the local Postal and Telegraph staff*, has been transferred to Wanganui for which place he departs next Tuesday. During his short residence here iVlr Pennev has proved himself a courteous and capable official and we feel sure the public will wish him future success and a speedy advancement in the'civil service of the colon\ r . Socially Mr Penney will be missed, for he has identified him Self with all outdoor sports especially football, cricket, and as a. member of the Motueka Gymnastic Club. His successor, Mr Fletcher, hails from YTanganui. At a special meeting of the Borough Council held on Tuesday it was decided on the motion of Cr Satherley, seconded by Cr Simpson, That the weekly half holiday during the current year he fixed for Wednesday afternoon. The new by laws, regulating traffic round, corners, were passed on the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by Cr* Knapp.
There will be a sitting of the Stipendary Magistrate’s and Old Age Pensions Court on Monday next. Messrs Gray ancTParker, the well known dentists, will visit Motueka on Monday and Tuesday next, and maybe consulted at the Post Office Hotel. In view of the match to be plaved at Brooklyn to-morrow week members of the M.C.0., are requested to meet on the local ground every evening for practice. The match in question is likely to be a well fought one, as it will practically decide which club will hold the banner until n«xt year. It is now, and has been for the past four years, in the possession of the Brooklyn club. J
According to the Public Health Act, parents and guardians are required to report to the Health Officer and also to the Borough Council cases of infectious diseases. It is also a duty to fumigate all rooms, clothing, etc., after sickness and a penalty if attached for failin o- so to do. 0
Last night a disagreement between several dogs on some trivial matter caused a horse belonging to a wellknown settler, to bolt from Mr Manoy’s verandah down Greenwood Street. Fortunately no damage of any moment was done to quadruped or conveyance. For the convenience of shippers and intending passengers it has been arranged that a flag shall be hoisted at the local Post Office as soon as the direct steamer Manaroa reaches theMotuek wharf. The bunting will be kept flying until the time of her departure. Thus the convenience of the public is studied.
Mr-J. W. Duncan, of the Brooklyn Cricket Club has been included in the team picked to play against Lord Hawke’s Eleven at Nelson, on the 26th instant.
