SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Motueka School Committee was held last night. Present Messrs Rankin (chairman-), Wratt, Bartlett, Knapp r Quayle, McFarlane, Ryder. Minutes of previous meeting read and adopted. Accounts amounting to L2 10s were passed for payment. Letters were received from the Education Board re proposed visit of Mr Hogben; re the appointment of Miss Davis as teacher; also stating that «r grant of L 3 14s had been passed in favor of the committee to liquidate unauthorised expenditure. The Headmaster in his monthly report stated that the number on the roll was 174, two scholar's being admitted during the month. The average attendance. 156, was good. The work

of the school was, however, retarded through being understaffed. The masters examination was completed and the scholars classified up zo the Sixth Standard. The Inspector’s annual examination wa« now proceeding. On the motion of Mr Wratt, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to those who replaced the windows broken by the boys. The result of the voting of the parents as to the time of opening the schools.in the morning was then ascertained. 56 parents voted for 9 o’clock and 14 for 9 30.

Mr Bartlett proposed, seconded by Mr Qnayle, That the school hours he as follows : —9 to 12, and 1.30 to 3.30. Mr Ryder proposed as an amendment, seconded by Mr -! McFarlane, That the hours be from 9 to 3 with an hour for dinner. The amendment was carried.

Proposed by Mr Ryder, seconded by Mr Wratt, That the children have a holiday from the close of the examinations to the end of the week and that the schools re-open next Monday at 9 o’clock. Carried. Ifc was decided on the motion of Mi Wratt. seconded by Mr Knapp, That the arrangements of the conference between the local committee appointed to interview Mr Hogben in connection with school affairs be left in the hands of the chairman. The meeting then adjourned.
