The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAY'S AND FRIDAYS, “TE ORA MOTA IWI.” TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1902.
The Motueka Brass Band will meet for practice on Thursday evening. It is to be hoped there* will be a full muster of members,- and that more interest will be taken in> this- institution. We regret- to- hear of the death, at Lyttelton, of. Mr G. Jenkins, father of Mr G. W. Jenkins, of Motueka, which I took place last week, Hsiness premises of Mr A. Manoy will be closed from six o’clock on Friday evening till the same hour on Saturday night. The public will do well to bear this in mind. A cribbage match Riwaka against Upper Moutere was played at Mr G. Ingram’s well known hostelry on Saturday evening, the visiting team having been driven over by Mr Stanley Fowler. The games resulted in favor of the Upper Moutere players,"-.who sooted thirteen games to their opponents twelve. The Riwaka players were Messrs J. Holyoake, R. Smith, J. Edmondson, H. Byrne, P. Arnold, H. Cook, S. Fowler, F. Trolove and J. Cook ; Moutere, Messrs Staff, F. Bensemaun, D. Wilkens, Brunning, Brooker, J. Hart, T. Bensemaun, arid Drogmuller (2).
Last Friday’s Inglewood Record savs : —Mr Richmond Hursthouse, a very “ old Taranakite ” is in Inglewood to-day. There is a pronounced feeling on the nart of non-Government supporters to ask Mr Hursthouse to contest the Egmont seat in the Opposition interest. Mr Hursthouse for many years represented Motueka in the House and proved himself a thoroughly straight goer. He is a mountain of strength to his party in debate, and consequently a man who commands attention from all sides. Opposition electors might “ go further and fare worse” than securing Mr Hursthouse as their representative, and as at present the five probable candidates are all on the Government side of the House,* a good Opposition member should have a really fair chance of success. The directors of the newly formed Dairy Factory Company at Takaka paid the first deposit to Messrs Langridge and Co. and have taken over the factory. Last week while two children of Mr W. Duncan, Riwaka, were searching for hen’s eggs amongst the hop poles stacked-near the house, the boy, about four years of age, came into collision with his sister, who was emerging from the stack, with the result that a knife which the girl held in her hand penetrated the boy’s eye, completely destroying the sight. Drs. Deck and Lucas placed "the unfortunate lad under an anaesthetic and successfully removed the eye. The boy is progressing satisfactorily. For the convenience of settlers in the Pangatotara district, a post office is to be established at the residence of Mr John Chapman. On Friday evening it is notified thatr a social and dance will be held iu MSThomas Macmahon’s kiln, Riwaka, in Wr honor of the returned troopers from that district who were on active service in South Africa. The arrangements for the function are in excellent hands and those who attend can rest assured that a most enjoyable evening is in store for , them. There will be good muse, and a bountiful supper will be pr>vided. A compassionate allowance of LIOO is to be paid to Mr Thomas Royes, exconstable, in recognition of his thirty six year’s service in the police force.
