INTOXICATING DRINKS.

A communication has been received from Rewi Taikawa of Pehiaweri, Whangarei, from which we make the following extracts:— I endorse the views put forth by Mr. Wil liair.s, Resident Magistrate of VVaimate, in the newspaper (Messenger) of December 16, 1862. There is oue ihing ihat specially attracted my notice—his reference to drinking spirituous liquors; the foolishness of the Maori in doing so. This is admitted. He answers the objections of other men (in reference to drinking propensities). This is what I have to sty in regard to his observations. 'Those who drink are foolish; but they are likewise foolish who keep, public houses, that is, you who have charge of the laws. This is where the evil lies. When you came to the Maori, they were living in ignorance of the laws; and the spirituous liquors came, and some Maoris preferred the laws and some spirituous liquors. Therefore I say, 0 Europeans, let Ihe intoxicating drinks be sent back (to England), for the face of Christianity will disappear from amongst the Natives.
