OTAKI NATIVE POLICE.

The following papers, viz., a memorandum from the Resident Magistrate, Manawatu, Mr. Buller, and a letter from Aomarere Te Puna, a Warden of that District, dated November 5, 4862, will, we are assured, be read with pleasure by all tbe friends of order. Tbe steady determination of the Magistrate to uphold tbe dignity of the law, and tbe promptitude of the Warden in the execution of bis instructions, are facts proclaiming the efficiency of tbe new system, and which we feel great satisfaction in recording. MEMORANDUM. . As a proof of the efficiency of the Olaki Native police, I forward (annexed) a letter from one of the Wardens, Te Aomarere Te Puna, whom I had entrusted with the execution of four distress warrants. The letter itself is a very fair official production, and my instructions have been carried out in a manner very creditable to the police. • This is the first attempt I have made in this district to distrain on Native properly. Tbe aggregate amount distrained for was £26185,4 d. I expected three of the warrants to be returned, nulla bona, instead of which the whole of the money has been paid, and a constable was sent up here to-day to pay the amount into my bands. Tbe duty has been well and promptly executed by the Native police where European police would have probably failed from tbe difficulty of identifying individual properly. Walter Buller, Resident Magistrate. ■Manawatu, Nov. 8,1862.
