MEETING AT ANAURA.
A meeting was recently held at Anaura, East Coast, on which occasion many Natives addressed the audience, advocating the system of Sir George Grey for the Government of the Maori people. Anaura is in the Tokomaru District, to which locality the late Mr. C. P. Baker was appointed Resident Magistrate in If arch last; but this truly excellent: and much respected gentleman never reached bis destination, having perished .with-many others in the " Pole Star." la bim the Government have
tost an efficient officer, and tbe natives a faithful and beloved friend. Tbe following are tbe remarks of some of tbe Anaiira speakers : HenarePotae said: Hearken 0 people; my thoughts are light; I have sought but the other side [i. e., the Government side] and I have found it. And now let ail of you follow me [i.e., accept with me the Governor's system]. Friend the Governor, salutations. Here am I coming under the Queen's authority. There are two things; which I. approve, namely, God's side, and the side of tbe Queen, so that my spirit may be saved and ray person protecte'. Piniha Ratapu said: You are using rightly tbe authority vested in you (0 Governor).! Let your thoughts be towards me, and let! my thoughts be towards you. | Hone Maeha said: 0 Sir, the Governor, | salutations. Here am I accepting the authority of the Queen. The names of the places whose people have given in their j adhesion to this authority are- Tangoiro, Marebea, Manukau, Waipare, Ohuru, Anauca, and Tabuiabu. This rope binding us, wll never be cut. Kereama Tamararo said: Friend tbe Governor, salutations. We are giving in our adherence to the Queen. This is our thought, that there are too few persons here to regulate our affairs. Do you seek out others and appoint them; let tbeie be many, so that the fire may bum [i. e., so that your system may be energetically carried out]. Hirini Ahunuku said: Friend the Governor, salutations. Your sentiments have been made known to us, and we assent to them. There are two things which I desire, that 1 should be entrusted to do my own affairs [i. e., Maori affairs], for you have appointed Mr. Baker to attend to your interests. This is what I wish to perform, my duly to<}od and man. Petakomaru, Te Paakamutu, and other natives spoke, but they were in sentiment just tbe same as those we publish.
