GLARING ATTEMPT AT IMPOSITION, BY A NATIVE NANED WI REWETI TE PUHI, OF THE RAY OF ISLANDS.

We lay before our Maori readers an extract from the letter of this worthless native, together with a communication from Mr. Barstow, the resident magistrate at Russell, exposing the wicked "attempt at imposition" whicb Wi Reweti Te Pubi endeavoured to practice* Such characters should not only be exposed in the. public prints* but punished with the utmost rigour or the law; nor do we believe that there would be one dissentient voice among the Maori people, were the law to exercise its power over such abandoned men as Wi Reweii Te Pubi. Extract from his Letter. "A vessel from Maketu has arrived at the Bay of Islands* and I bave seized and taken possession of a gun. * * # I have seen your proclamation (the Governor's) at Mr. Barstow's, offering a reward of 500?. for this work. (Signed), Wi Rewbti Te Pvhi." Extract from Mr, Barttow'f Letter. •'The guq was taken from Puhi's own bouse * * * and put on board the vessel, and brought on shore, by Pubi. «'On his preferring the claim to me, the bungling attempt at imposition was so evident that be successively reduced his demand for reward from 3001. to one shilling, (Signed) R. C. Barstow, R.M."
