TRIAL OF PEPENE, FOR THE MURDER OF PARE.
We are quite sure that the Maori people will be much interested in reading the detailed account of Pepene's trial for the murder of Pare, with whom he lived as his wife. It is unnecessary, to point out the marked difference, between an exited Maori tribunal and the calm proceedings of the great Courts of Jay, so ooervedly appreciated by ,lhe EngUs|i nttioo, and the peoples of ttberoMntrJet. The aMives who read the evidence we now place before them, will see that while the judicial officers of the Queen are careful and anxious to guard the law, they are equally careful to render the fullest justice to the prisoner Hie bar. We have been given to understand, that it was the intention of the: relatives of the murdered woman to avenge her death by slaying Pepene, in accordance with native custom; but the Waikato natives residing at Nelson, decided that the matter should be banded over toto authorities. The confidence tboseippd by the Waikatos in the Institutions of the country, we cannot but : applaud* Moreover, it : shows a spirit of forbearance, very unlike that manifested by them, under similar circumstances, on many former occasions. It were well for the natives generally to ; act as wisely as the Waikatos have done in the case of ?epene—sireauously discoun-i*eMpcing-the wild displays of Maori usages, t arouse the worst passions of the I human heart. : < ! '
I It will be seen, that the Queen's Repre-| sentative alone holds the prerogative of mercy, wuicb His Excellency lias been] pleased to extend to tbe culprit Pepene,; ? whose life has not oily been spared, but] rwbose imprisonment has been limited to Hie i term of three years. I Many of the Natives who strongly advocate the barbarous principle—" blood for t blood"—will be disposed to look upon the [act of the Governor in no very friendly ' mood; but all right-minded persons—all the 1 £ advocates of a higher principle than that of * mere revenge, will duly appreciate His ; Excellency's clemency. It may not be out of place to inform our ,-. readers, that the misguided Pepene is con-. : necled with the Ngatikinohaku and Ngaiif rarua tribes, whose principal settlement is . Waikawau on the Mokau coast. At tlie Aorere diggings ht accumulated the turn of ||fWi a r ter which he visited his relatives in | AncWaniJ f bat the vicious habits in which he long Indulged, gaining the mastery | over him, bis hard earnings speedily disappeared, and he was under the necessity of ~ borrowing money to pay for the passage of himself and the unfortunate woman be killed, to the Port of Nelson. Pepene | having absented himself from his native t village for three years, bis' aged fatherj I Pobarama Tohikore travelled by land as far as Wellington in quest of him, some time ; prior to the perpetration of the murder. It is stated that the meeting of recognition between the father and son took place, when the latter was loaded with the odious badge of crime—tbe felon's chain. The deceased was a relative of tbe Chief Anatipa Kabolea, of Kawbia, having been a member of the Ngatimaniapoto tribe, aud resided for some lime in the Waipa country with her people. Pepene was charged by her relations to treat her kindly, which he promised to do; bur the sequel has proved his faithlessness to bis promise. Pepene's trial haying appeared in the local journals, it is considered advisable to publish ttw Ifasri translation only, which is herewith aojMxed. :
