A Valedictory Letter to His Excellency Sir George Grey, From Eruera Mahu Potuone, of Awataha a Chiev of the Ngapuhi.

Auckland, Jan. 3, 1854. O Sire, Governor Grey, Salutations to yon. Salutations to you, and to your loving friend.* Great was my affection for you both when you first came hither. Friend, this is my speech to you. Will you not come back to this place? Do return; —will you not? The reason why I thus speak, is owing to the extreme kindness you have evinced for the men of New Zealand. There has been no evil, nor any cause of complaint ns respects your administration ; therefore I urge you to return hither. And now, should you stay away, and another Governor be appointed, see you to this, and select a person like yourself as a protector for us. Let him be considerate, and kinJ, and let his heart shine brightly. If I discover any evil during your absence, I will make it known to you. JJut now the land is quiet. Go, O Father, to your Chief, —to tinQueen, —the Chief of all the tribes. Go, C) Father, carrying with you the alfcction of your people,—the people of Ngapnlii, of Waikato, of the Ngatipaoa, of Ilauraki, and nil the other tiibes. This is my song for you.
