Cropping out of *-J Coal in several places, both lo the North and South of Auckland, seems lo indicate the existence of extensive Coal-fields in the Northern District of New Zealand. Seeing the probability of Steam Communication bring established &i/ ieny of Panama, between England and the Australasian Colonies, ! know of nothing which would more certainly contribute to the advantage of the Port of Auckland and ils neighbourhood, than Iho discovery, within a convenient dis lance, of Coal suitable for purposes of Steam navigation. In the hope, of promoting this object, I shall have much pleasure in placing at your disposal the sum of One Hundred Pounds, to be paid to ihe person who, within Six Months from this date, shall discover a Seam cality, (as to distance and accessibility) shall, in your opinion, be of practical value to Ihe Port of Auckland for the purposes of Slcam Navigation. I shall be glad to leave it to yourselves to make any further explanations which you mav think it desirable lo add, with a view to the"attainment of the desired object. I have the honour lo be, The Undersigned, lo whom the above Loiter was addressed, arc prepared lo pay the Sum of ONE JIUNDIIED POUNDS to the first person who shall discover and make known to them, within the lime limited, a Seam of Coal equivalent, in their opinion, to the above description.
