SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

The 'Guardian' has received the following by telegraph, dated Kumara July 7: —" A serious mining accident occurred on the lead yesterday. Pour men were buried through the ground caving in. The claim was being worked by Cooney, Kelly, Riley, aud Quinlivan, near tlie prospectors' claim, Dillman's track. "Whilst in the tunnel a set of timber gave way, causing an immense fall of earth, which completely enveloped th.? men. The occurrence was not known till evening, when the men should hava left work. Immediate steps were taken to release them, and relays of miners hare- been working most energetically. Quinlivan was got out at three o'clock, this morning, and is not seriously hurt. Kelly can be heard speaking, and it. is expected, be will be got out this afternoon. It is feared Cooney and Kiley

are dead, and it will take a long time to recover their bodies. The air in the tunnel.is very foil!, and it is with great'difficulty the rescuers can work. Una of'the men, Oconey, has a wife and. family." Kunnrn, July Oth: Kelly, another of those injured by the mining accident, was released on Saturday nrjht and taken to the hos piral. Efforts were made to restore circulation by means of hot bricks and fomentations, hut all was in vain, the poor fellow dying yesterday. Bilsy and Cooney, the other two men, are both dead. Riley's body was recovered, but Coouey's will not be released till to-day, as there has been another fall of earth. 3 p.m. Cootiey's body was recovered at 12 o'clock last night. It was sadly disfigured, .and great difficulty was experienced in extricating it from tue debris, the ground continually caving in while the rescuers were at work. An inquest on the three bodies will be held to-morrow. Subscriptions are being started for the relief of Cooney's. wife and family.. A public entertainment is being got up for the same object.—' Daily Times.'
