HYDE.
(Prom our own correspondent.) July 10th. A public meeting was held in the Com--mercial Hotel on Monday evening, the 9th inst., at eight o'clock, for the purpose af considering what steps should be taken in reference to a letter received by Mr. Laverty from the Waste Lands Board. There was a good attendance, and Mr. Laverty, who was called to the chair, informed the meeting that he had received a letter from the Waste Lands Board, stating that the consideration of the petition from the inhabitants of Hyde had been deferred till the ISth inst., to allow Mr. Main, the lessee of Deep Dell run, and the petitioners, to be iu attendance. The Chairman commented strongly on the action of the Waste Lands Board in again delaying the opening up of the land in question, and trusted some gentleman present would move resolutions to that effect.
Mr. Ramsay, in moving the first resolution) stated that although for some time past he had abstained from taking any active part in public matters, yet at this time he was willing tolend a helping hand. His resolution, which was seconded by Mr. Annett, was as follows:—" That this meeting views with dissatisfaction the action of the Waste Lands Board in reference to the opening up of the land on Deep Dell and Mr. Main's run, as peLitioned for by the inhabitants of Hyde. That the genuineness of the petition having been disputed by Mr. Main, and the matter referred by the Board to the District Land Officer, who, after careful enquiry in presence of Mr. Main, his solicitor, and the petitioners, declared himself perfectly satisfied with its validity, and stated that he would so report; this meeting is of opinion that no further delay should have occurred in opening up the land in question. That the only apparent reason why the Board has postponed the consideration of the petition in question seems to be the receipt oi a letter from Mr. Main, which letter this meeting considers an unwarrantable attempt toiuterfere with the decision of the Board, disrespectful to the District Land Officer, and vexatious to the people of Hyde.." Carried unanimously. Mr. Laughton proposed, and Mr. Mathewson seconded, the following resolution :—" That while, this meeting is of opinion that 1 he petitioners having clearly proved • their case before, the District Land OfEcer should not have-been called upon to appear before the Waste Lands Board; yet the matter is of such vital importance as to require that a deputation from the petitioners should be appointed to do so —Messrs. Laverty and Eamsay to form said deputation." Carried unanimously.
On the motion of Mr. P. Laugh ton, seconded by Mr. M'Auly, it was resolved that a fresh memorial be drawn up, and the names of all those who had not an opportunity of signing the former petition obtained.
A subscription list to defray the expenses of the deputation was opened, and and nearly £79 pounds subscribed at once.
The foregoing will I think plainly show that the inhabitants of Hyde axe thoroughly in earnest about these blocks of land, and are determined to do all they can to have them opened. There are a number of respectable people here anxiously awaiting the decision of the Board, and prepared at onee to settle on the land should io be opened. It is to be hoped, therefore, that the Eoard wiii see fit at onee to comply with, the prayer of the petition.
