The 'Otago Guardian ' art critic reTiews very favorably, Mr. Chapman's exhibits at Dunedin :—" Mr. E. A. Chapman has contributed a few of the moat conspicuous exhibits in the Gallery. No. 4(), representing Morait Tutoke, the highest peak in the Darran Ranges, has extorted the admiratioa of hundreds of visitors. It is a scene ef the wildest grandeur the lofty snow-capped p>:ak rearing its. colossal head, bleached with some recent snow storm, above the less gigantic but not less majestic mountain giants around. Beneatb and in the foreground is a stream flowing peaceably through a dense thicket ot trees and scrub. The artist has given a very happy representation of the mountain scenery, and. viewed from a distance, the effect of the landscape is strikingly natural. A nearer inspection, however ; reveals an absence of painstaking effort) and neither the water nor foliage are bo skillfully treated as we could have wished. The effort, however, is a promising one, for it reveals considerable artistic ability,' and shows that by application and study Mr. Chapman will yet produce paintings that will not suffer by comparison along side of some of the productions of gentlemen who have the title of K.S. A. affixed to their names. No. 14, Hollyford Valley, on the Martin's Bay track; No. 35, Lake Alabaster, on the West Coast; No. 102, a peak in the Darran Eanges ; and No. 124, a river sketch, are all by the same artist, and . exhibit to a great, extent th<3 same description of treatment."
