EDUCATION.

The following is taken from the able report of Mi\ Jolin Hislop, the Inspector of Schools : . - BLACKS (OPHIE). On roll:—Boys, 13 ; girls, 7; total, 20. Present:—Boys, 10.; girls, 6 ; total, 16. . G-oldfield and agricultural district. The school is of .iron, well lined, and is tolerably comfortable. A small residence for the master.is under the same roof. The ground is unfenced. The instruction is of a most elementary character, and the results are far from satisfactory. The teacher seems to be deficient in ihrce o£ character. The number of educable children who might attend is reported to be 39. Of these, 10 attend school regularly, and ten attend irregularly. Nineteen, or nearly half of the whole, do not attend at all. This is a very unusual circumstance especially in the G-oldfields, and I fear it. must be mainly attributed to the people's want of confidence in the teacher. If a very decided improvement does not take place before next visit, 1 1 must recommend a change of teacher.. DETBKEADMD THSTKEKS* On roll -.—Boys, 20 ; girls, 13; total, 33. Present:—Boys, 18 ; girls, 11; total, 29. Mining and pastoral district. The school is erected near " Thompson's Station " to. suit the towns of Dry bread and Tinkers, and is about a mile from each. The school is commodious and- suitable. The residence of iron and wood, small, but is being enlarged. jN"o fencing yet. The teacher has recently arrived from Canterbury Province. Method, classification. and discipline are good. The proficiency of the pupils in the ordinary elementary subjects is very fair on the whole. The master gives promise of becoming a very successful teacher.
