ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL REDUCES WAGES.

Auckland, Nov. 4.

A decision to reduce bv 15 per cent, the salaries of all the officials of the 'Onehunga Borough Council .receiving £4 10/- or more a week was made by the council last evening. The honorarium of the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, is to be reduced hy a similar amount. The matter will be reviewed in' three months. This was the recommendation of the council in committee following a discussion at the previous meeting upon the decision that the working lime of the outside staff should he reduml to one week in three. Subsequently the foreman reported lhal Ibe reduced lime of working was detrimental to economy. He said that the efficiency had deteriorated by over 50 per cent.

When the matter was discussed last evening I lie Mayor moved that a general reduction of 71 per cent, la* made on all wages and salaries except those of the two girls in the olli.ee. He thought 15 per cent, was too drastic and that results cnuld not be obtained from a dissalislied staff. After* further discussion, a general reduction of 15 per cent, was agreed to.
