PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS.

SPECIAL TESTS ABANDONED

It is learned that the synchronous examination for the certificate of proficiency in the primary schools, the most extensive of its kind ever contemplated in the Dominion, has been abandoned and that tlih procedure followed in former years of awarding certificates will be followed.

The Director of Education, Mr. T. 'B. Strong, in an interview, said the .synchronous examination had. been cancelled at the direction of the Minister, but declined to sav why.

[A synchronous examination of all proficiency candidates was to be held oil* the same dates and under the same conditions for the whole Dominion with a view <>l placing the examination on a more uniform basis. The examination lias been based, to a large extent, mi the accrediting system, and 'during ircccnl years a considerable discrepancy in the percentage of teachers' recommendations recognised by the department in the various education districts has been noticed. The purpose of the' examination was to enable a Dominion survey to remedy the discrepancy to be made].
