FOXTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

G(>AtMITTEE MEETING. A committee meeting of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held in Ross’s rooms on Thursday evening, presided o'vcir by Air. D. Christie (president). Also present were Messrs Jno. and Jus.- Ross, T. Hughes, S. H. Poole, R. 0. Hornblow, T. Robinson, N. Cresswell, W. 11. Walton, W. H. Nicholas, Mesdames R. Owen, E. J. Murphy, J. ■Martin, A. Heasman, Miss A. Speirs and the secretary (Air. E. J. Mufrphy). AiPPOTNT'MEINT OF .JUDGES & STEWARD'S. Judges were appointed as follows for the summer show: —

Roses and sweet peas: Mr. F. •Mason (Eeilding); cut blooms and pot plants: Mr. Aggitt (Rongotea); decorative: Airs. GaJland (Newbury) ; vegetables: Mr. Shadier (Palmerston North); cookery: Ala A. 11. Whitehead (Palmerston N.j; needlework: Mrs. IT. Witched (Olaki); school work: Air. Saxby (Afonina).

'Stewards were appointed as follows:—Roses: Afesdames C. Edwards and .1 .I\. TToriiblow; sweel peas: Airs. .). Marlin; cut blooms: Mesdames A. Heasman and E. J. Murphy; poi plants and vegetables: Rev. W. If. Nicholas; decorative: Mrs. J. G. ITonoro; cookdry and home industries: Airs. W. Trueman; school work: Mrs. Al. Ross; needlework: Airs. R. Moore. The president reported that .Mrs. and Miss Patchett had again consented lo take charge of a cuke and sweet stall at the summer show and tliev also intended to eater for afternoon tea. This stall had been greal financial assistance lo thi‘ 'Society at the last show. The secretary and Mr. .Jas. Ross had already commenced work on (he stall which would lie made more attractive at the coming event. It was decided to hold a baby show on the same lines as ai the last show.

HUGOESTED LXKOVATTOHS. Mr l«\ Ciiplc submilted a proposal for a. piano playing contest in tin; evening as a means .of popularising the exhibition. He suggested that two sections be arranged, one for children under 12 and the other for children betwcecn the ages of 12 and 15. lie suggested that they be allowed to select their own pieces and possibly a section for duettists would prove popular a suggested age limit of Hi to be imposed in this instance. The president thanked Mr. Caple L'or bis suggestion which lie said would lie a good innovation. Members commented favourably on the proposal and it- was decided lo adopt the scheme, three sections as outlined to comprise the entertainment for the evening instead of 'the elocutionary contest. Mr. Caple was appointed judge and it was decided to make entrance fid with a. first prize of 5/- and second of 2/fi in each section. Rev. AY. 11. Wa-lton also brought L'oi ward a suggestioji for the bene-

fit of the society and societies in the district. He outlined a proposal for competition between shows throughout the. distriefj for a shield on similar lines to the competition at present in vogue amoiigst Wellington suburban Horticultural Societies. A judge would be appointed to visit the two shows at, say, Bulls, Sanson, Rongotea, Eoxton and Levin respectively and award points for best all round display, best exhibition, and best management. He had discussed the matter with Rongotea officials and Mi'. 0. H. Bennett, of Palmerston Horth who had expressed the opinion that there would be no difficulty in obtaining the services of ■a suitable judge. The suggestion if •adopted would create considerably .more interest and pride in the various exhibitions throughout the district.

The matter was discussed and members approved the suggestion. Rev. Walton was deputed to obtain a copy of the rales from the Wellington Societies and further details when the matter will be again discussed and submitted to the various other societies in the district in an endeavour to have a similar competition started next season in the Manawatu district. It was decided to ask Air. J. Linklateir, M.P., to open the summer show.
