SCHOOL COMMITTEE SUBSIDIES.
The Department of Education has decided to tighten up procedure with regard to claims of school committees for subsidies oil voluntary contributions made in the interests of school environment. In the past several committees have ben lax in claiming subsidies 'after they have been approved and the result lias meant the creation of an accumulating liability for the 'Department. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board the Department advised that it intended to wipe off, or at least withhold from payment during the present financial year, unclaimed subsidies which had been approved prior to 1929. Mr. J. K. Horniblow asked : Just exactly what does that mean? Does it mean that because committees have been unable to proceed with certain work they are to forfeit the subsidies? That would be contrary to Statute. He said some committees found it necessary to re-arrange certain work and this meant delay in uplifting the subsidy. He suggested Unit committees should be circularised on the subject which was agreed to.
