THEFT AND FALSE PRETENICES.

(Before Air. .1. L. Stout, S.AL, in Iho Palmerston North Magistrate's Court yesterday, Thomas John liiicinsky, aged 23, a. labourer, was charged that on June 27, at Karioi, he did obtain a. pair of shoes valued at ill 10/6, from 'Stanley Cox, storekeeper, bv a certain false pretence and also with the. .theft at Palmerston North on September !) of a sample case and contents, the property of Charles George Hook. > Accused pleaded guilty on both counts, Senior Detective Quirke stating that the first offence had been committed when the accused was out of employment. He had written out. a false order and presented it to the stojrek'eeper on the pretence that he was employed by Hie New Zealand State .Forestry Department and. had wages due to him. At .Palmerston North he had been befriended by a canvasser and given work, subsequently being put off through lack of work. He had I lion taken the hag and contents, valued at £7 10/-. A portion of (lie contents and the case had later been recovered.

Tim Magistrate: I can hardly give the accused probation on these charges and, under the circumstances, lie will be sentenced to one month on the first charge and three months on the sceond, the sentences to he concurrent.
