APPROPRIATION OF MOTOR CARS.
MIR, LINK LA TEE A.'SKS FOR MORE DRASTIC PUNISHMENT.
(Mr. J. Linlklater, M.P., for Malta watu, in the House, asked whether the Minister would instruct Magistrates 'throughout New Zealand to deal more severely with those who have been in the habit of removing motor-ears from parking places and converting them to (heir own use. It was quite unsafe, he said, to leave a motorcar on any street without the fear of it being removed by some unauthorised person. This practice, said Mr. Linklater, had become very prevalent throughout New Zealand and he thought the Minister would agree that if the punishment was made more drastic the practice'' would be discontinued. At the present time the- penalty was so small that the offence was growing to an alarming extent throughout the Dominion. The Minister in reply said that > the Magistrates of New Zealand had the power to increase penalties if necessary and there was no necessity for him. to give them direction in this matter. He thought, however, that the .publicity that would ibe given through Mr. Link- • later’s question would induce Magistrates to make the penalties for this crime more severe.
