VICTIMISED.

WIHILE WAITING FOR THE DOLE. Saying that he was out of work ancl that his children were starving, a man has been playing upon the sympathy of Wanganui residents and obtaining gardening and other woiik, but, instead of giving value for the money that has been paid him, lie has, in many instances, left his temporary employers sadly lamenting (says the Herald). One - man gave him half a day’s work, but after putting in a couple of hours’ work,, the unemployed gentleman decamped with his fulltime money. At another place the same l individual engaged in an argument with the lady of the house lie cause she would not agree to extend a half-day’s work to a whole day’s work. The man worked very leisurely, pausing freqeuntly for a smoke, and after partaking of morning tea provided by the housewife, who paused in the midst of a hea|vy day’s washing to give him refreshment, he wandered off, having been paid the day previously by the lady’s husband. Other complaints have come from different sources, and in each case the work had been provided, not because a gardener was needed, but out of sympathy for an “unfortunate” victim of unemployment. “I can’t afford a gardener,” said one man, “but if a man’s children are starving I’ve always been ready to help.” In future, he said, he would turn a deaf ear to hardluck storiea.
