RUGBY.

FOXTON WINS JUNIOR ICO M PETITION.

On Saturday last Wanderers (southern champions) and Foxton (northern champions) met on Easton Park in the final for the Horo whenua Championship. After a hard game, in which the local team always held the upper hand, Fox-toil left the field winners, the score being 6 to 3. The teams were: Wanderers (Black) : Witniata (3), Roberts, 'Patterson, Jones (2), Tokapua, Williams, Seymour, Tantrum, Miller, Royal, Tatana, Piki. Foxton (Yellow and Black.) : IN. Huff, Croon, IT. Huff, Williams, Hirini, Simpson, Hartley, Chrystall, Taylor, Robinson, Barber, Scott, Wright, Anderson, Smith.

THE G AME. Foxton won the toss, and the Black's kicking off, immediately rushed to the attack, but a free kick to Yellows sent the invaders hack. The Black forwards with their advantage in weight kept up the pressure, and W'iniata missed a shot at goal from a free kick. Simpson then stemmed a hot Black attack with a neat line kick, Williams marking shortly after and driving the Blacks hack. The visitors, however, wore out for an early score, and the situation looked dangerous for Foxton when N. Huff fell back and held up the Black forwards. The Yellow backs had now got their sea legs, and Hartley sent them away on a promising passing rush, Williams breaking almost, through only to throw out a low pass. Immediately afterwards the same player attempted a. pot, but the ball did not rise. The Blacks forced. From the kick off the Yellows were away again with a likely passing- rush which ended with Croon being well tackled by W'iniata. The Yellows were then awarded a free kick, and Williams drew first blood with a good goal. Foxton 3—Wanderers 0.

.(Foxton from thence onward played improved football, Hartley behind the scrum varying his attack well, using the blind side .judiciously, and only WJiuiata’s splendid tackling saved the Black line on several occasions. A long throw out by Foxton found an opening, and the Black forwards were away on a dangerous sortie which IT. Huff stopped by taking a timely mark. VVlillianis had several attempts at a pot, but his luck was out. He also essayed a goal from a penalty, but the distance was too great, and half-time left the scores: Foxton 3, Levin Wanderers 0.

The first incident of the second spell was a fine break through by ‘‘.Jerry’’ Hirini, who was playing a flashing game. However, he was short of pace, and was caught, the Black forwards packing round and relieving. ‘By sheer weight the Black forwards carried play into T’oxton’s twenty-five, and a free kick to them saw W'iniata land a splendid goal from the side line, bringing the scores level and the spetators to a high pitch of excitement.

From the kick out Foxlou jumped straight to the attack, and the. Yellow forwards, with Wright, Anderson, Barber and Taylor in the van, carried all before them for Wright to fitll on the ball and score a we I Ij-deserved try. Williams failed to add points: Foxt.oii f>— Levin Wlanderers 3. The Blacks were now tiring the Ijncsil team going stronger than ever. Tfc was only the good line kicking of the fall-hack, Winiafa, and a series of free 'kicks against them, that kept the dashing Yellow pack out on half a dozen occasions. 'The Yellow backs were making progress with their passing rushes, but Croon was being crowded and also finding Winiafa a solid proposition to pass. Patterson made a t nice run for tlie Wanderers, but was not supported. The Blacks forwards were tiring fast with the exception of I’iki (wing forward), who was always dangerous, and broke away by sheer strength and determination on several oscasions. The game was held up for several minute's owing to Hartley injuring his knee, and he had to leave the field, B. Colev coming on in his place. The locals broke away in a good i ttsli, hut. Patterson saved with a good run and kick for the line. A few minutes before the hell the Blacks made a dying effort ,and looked really dangerous, but the attack went astray, and the game ended Foxton (>, Wanderers 3. The Foxton Juniors are deserving of congratulations on their success after many years’ striving. A light team playing the fast open game, their football has been u pleasure to watch, and their fitness and playing ability are a great credit to their coach, Mr A. Walls.

MAiNA WHENTiA DE-FEA TS HAWKE’S BAY.

The Mauawhemva. Rugby representatives registered their first win of the season on Saturday, when I hey defeated Hawke’s Bay by a field, goal to a penalty goal—a onepoint margin. The result of the game was a surprise to the Mauau lienua. supporters, and incidentally this is the first time since the amalgamation of the Manawatu and Horowheuua unions that it has beaten Hawke’s Bay. _ The game had not been long in progress before it was obvious that the visitors were not playiug up to form, and there was no improvement as the game proceeded. Hawke’s Bay had the wind behind them in the first half, and though given numerous opportruni-

ties by their forwards, the backs were unable to operate with effect. There was only a meagre measure of concerted hack play, the game being mainly confined to the forwards. .In this department the home team, though a much lighter [tack than their opponents, were a better combination, some of thenwork: in the loose being of a high standard.
