FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FLAXMILEERS.
■SPECIAL LEGISLATION FOR GRANT FROM iCiONSOLIDATED FUND TO UNEMPLOYMENT • BOARD.
A. representative meeting was held recently, at which a resolution was carried requesting the Member for the distinct (Air J. Liiiklater) to urge the Government to financially assist the flaxmilling industry by a grant from the consolidated fund to -be administered by the Industries and Commerce Department, unit-1 the Unemployment Board functioned. Such grant to be repaid by the Unemployment Board. The object, of the meeting and resolution was to provide work for those who had been unemployed -since the closing of the haxmills and to relieve many necessitous cases.
The following reply was telegraphed by Mr J. Linjdater yesterday : "Have been advised bv the
Prime Minister that legislation is being obtained to make an ad-
vance from the consolidated
fund to enable the Unemployment Board to meet the ease of unemployment in the flaxmilling industry. He regrets, however, that the proposal that pending functioning of Unemployment Board assistance should he rendered by Industries and ■Commerce Department is not possible, as no funds a?’e available for that purpose, and no statutory authorisation exists for such expenditure.”
