HOSPITAL BOARD MEMBERSHIP.

RED POTION SUGGESTED. Following the resignation of Mr. S. A. Broadbelt, of Levin, from the Palmerston North Hospital Board owing to pressure of business, an interesting position has arisen. The matter of representation of the whole district was briefly discussed at the meeting of the board yesterday. The chairman (Mr. J. K. Hornblow) stated that in future it might be advisable to reduce the membership of the Sward from seventeen to fifteen, in which event (he Or on a and Horowhenua Counties would each lose one representative. At present the latter was over-represented on a valuation arid population basis.

Mr Monk said Horowhenua. was still entitled to thifee representatives until an Order-in-Council was issued proclaiming it otherwise.

It was pointed out that the representation on the hoard under the Hospitals Act was such as the Minister of Health might from time to time decide. The Horowhenua County was entitled to another reipresentat ive in the meanlime, but the Minister could be communicated with suggesting that the basis of representation be revised.

Mr. Howell: WUy not notify the Horowltenua County of the position? .

The chairman stated that inquiries had been instituted subsequent to the resignation of Mr. Broadbelt. On more than one occasion it had 'been thought that the board was a little too cumbersome, but 'they had to he guarded about the matter. When there was a previous agitation for a reduction in the membership the Minister had upheld a protest by members against .any decrease in the personnel. “I think the local body concerned should be notified and the onus placed on them concerning the appointment of another member,” said Mr. Month. “I don’t think that they will take action in any event, although they are entitled to do so.”

The managing-secretary suggested that the Health Department he approached for a ruling.

The board decided to notify the Horowhenua County Council that M was at present entitled to further representation if it wished.
