YOUNG MAORI I 'Ali'i'Y CANDIDATE. MR . I Mil TE HUBJN til-JONES. Aiiol 1101’ candidate tor the Wosleni Maori seal rendered vacant; by the deal'll of Sir Maui Honiara, Mr. IVi Tu Iliirinui-Jones, is 32 wars of age, anil is a descendant of |lie noted Alaniapoto chief, llauanrii IVmtania. He was educated lirst at the Ongarue Public School, proceeding from there to Wesley Training College at Auckland. lie is standing in .'the in!erests of the Young Maori Party. In 1920 lie was appointed to a position in the Native .Department ai- Wanganui as associate to Judge Aehc.sou, and later to Judge Drown. He continued in this position until 1928, when he was Iransfcrred to Auckland to take up special duties as Consolidation Officer in charge of the King Counl rv Consolidation of native lands, upon which work he is at present engaged.
In the course of his duties he has conic in contact with practically the whole oi; the natives within tiie Western Afaori electorate, and has, as a result of his experiences, (become j iutimafjely conversant with many of the problems confronting the native race.
'Mr. Pei Te Hurinui-Joues is also prominent in the held of sport, talking the keenest interest in the organisation of football and tennis. He lias played representative football for both King ‘Country and Wanganui, and he is also a keen tennis enthusiast. He was the first secretary and treasurer (and still a member) of the Maori Lawn Tennis Association, which was instituted mainly by the Young Maori Party.
