TO INCREASE DOMINION REVENUE.
' ADDITIONAL PETROL TAX. NEW' CUSTOMS AND EXISE DUTIES. Wellington, July 23. ■Following are some of the chief alterations in the 'Customs tariff which become effective (subject to Section 143 of the Customs Act of 1913) made bv resolution submitted to Parliament this evening.
Increases are made on the following:— Cigarettes from 25/0 to 33/9 per 100(1, and from 10/6 to 13/9 per lb. Cigars from 12/- to 15/- per lb. Rough sawn timber increased by 2/6 per 100 superficial feet. Sawn dressed timber increased font 7/6 lo 11/6. Fresh small fruits increased from Id to 2d per lb. Motor spirit increased 4d to 7d per gallon.
The foregoing goods are liable to Ihe same rate if of British or foreign origin. The’rates on the following goods are also increased:— 'British and foreign apparel and hosiery; British rate ‘increased 2| per cent.; foreign, 5 per cent. Motor vehicles : Foreign increased by 5 per cent, and body duty, both British and foreign, increased by per cent. The allowance for underproof spirits is abolished.
'lncreases have also been made on a number of mnnu'f actives of foreign origin.
'The primage duty is abolished except for Australian goods and a surtax payable on dutiable goods is substituted at the rate of l-200th in the case of tobacco, cigarettes, timber and petrol, and nine-for-tieths of the duty on all other goods except wheat and flour, which are exempt from both primage and surtax.
The increase in the petrol tax from 4cl to 7d was the chief item to which exception was taken in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday night, some sharp differences of opinion on the Government’s proposals being expressed.
