KI WIS v. AWiAOOU. Kiwis and Awahou met on Easton Park yesterday before a fair crowd of spectators in the first game of the local Heppnor cup competition in aid of the unemployment fund. After an evenly contested game the rivals left the field with the scores standing 3 all. The result is an indication of the selectors’ good work in sorting out evenly balanced teams to do battle for the cup, and augurs well for the success of the competition from both (be simulators’ and players’ point- of view.
THE GAME. From the kick; off Kiwis who had a young and sparkling team, in contrast to Aiwa lion’s leavening of almost veterans, made the pace warm, and 'Simpson with a snappy short kioik: looked dangerous. A knockon however, saved Awahou. The Kiwis carried on with a good forward rush but P. Honour got offside and the free kick relieved for Awahou. From the free kick Awahou, earijied play into Kiwi's twentylive and R. IB'nll cut in and the Kiwis were tried on defence, Simpson running round and relieving with a line kick. The Kiwis worked up into Awahou’s twenty-five and a scrum ensued in a handy position. The hall came out to the latter and a passing rush found the leather in Dunn's hands. TTo cut in nicely and scored in a good position. McGregor missed the kick. Kiwis 3 Awahou nil. From the kick out Awahou forwards with Robinson in the van, broke away, but Toki saved with a good kick to flic line. The Kiwis ('nine again and a- good passing rush ensued. Simpson correctly passed in when cornered, but tin* pass found the inside back not in position, and a promising movement btokc down. Awahou then took a turn and Tlirini broke away, but no support was forthcoming. Simpson then put in good work on defence and the attack was staved off. Half time sounded with (lie score—Kiwis 3 —Awahou nil.
Awahou were early on the attack in the second spell, Fuller saving for Kiwis with a good line kick. Then Fuller broke through from a scrum, Taylor relieving with another line kick. Immediately afterwards Alsop broke away on the wing from a cross kick, but found •I. Ilnff a solid tackier. Huff was knocked out temporarily after his tackle. Robinson then led an Awahou forward sortie, hut the attack went astray, owing to an infringement. Kiwis then penned Awahou in their 25 and were close lo scoring several times, a force down eventually bringing relief to Awalmn. Kiwis kept up the attack and Alsoji was almost through, but was well taclklod. Taylor then made a good run for Awahous, but was smothered. Awahou were awarded a free kick in a good position, Taylor’s kick just missing. The AwnIn,ms were now keeping up a sustained attack, and Taylor had another shot from wide out, which again missed. From a scramble .T. Huff picked up and dashed over for a good (rv right on lime, thus bringing the scores level. Taylor’s kick hit the cross-bar and the game ended 3 all. On the run of play the younc Kiwi team can be said lo have been unlucky to draw after playing the better game, and having a distinct territorial nd\outage throughout. Mr. Neville carried the whistle.
