LOCAL COLLECTION'S AND RELIED.
During the week the programme arranged by the recent public meeting in connection with raising funds and alleviating local unemployment lias been carried out smoothly. The deputation waited on the Council on Monday evening as agreed with the result that the Council agreed to subsidise all voluntary contributions £1 for £1 up to £IOO provided il bad the control of the relief work. The Town iGlerk forwarded a wire pointing out to the Minister for Public Works the seriousness of the position locally and asking’ for a Government subsidy on moneys raised. He has received a reply to the effect that he has instructed the Public Works Department to forward the necessary information in regard to the subsidy, but so far this has not come to hand. On Wednesday the Surf ClubBulls fool ball ma tch was played as per schedule and as a result the sum of 18/- was collected and handed lo the treasurer by the spoils committee. The collectors commenced operations on Wednesday and one committee returned with A‘s and another with £5 4/- while donations to date apart from these amounts total £1 10/-. During (he week 37 men have been given a few hours work each, an amount of £l3 5/2 having been expended in this connection.
The executive committee meets again on "Monday evening when fresh work will lie apportioned in accordance with the money available.
MAORI CONCERT SUNDAY EVENING.
A Maori concert under the management of Mr. Hone McMillan, (of Levin), and in aid of the local unemployed, will be held in the Royal theatre to-morrow evening a,t. 8 o'clock. An inloresling programme in ‘keeping with the day will he rendered.
