STOCK ON THE HIGHWAYS.
MUST HAVE PROPER GUIDANCE. When entering- convictions in the Foxton Magistrate’s '.Court on Thursday in respect to wandering stock eases, the Magistrate (Mr. J. L. Stout) referred to some recent comment, made by a certain- local body with regard to his remarks in connection with a similar ease recently. The ease under review was one in which a farmer was charged with allowing stock to be on the Himatangi highway without.
proper guidance. Evidently, said the. Magistrate, some farmers did not think that there was any necessity for proper guidance when they were in charge, of stock on the roads. It certainly did not appear to he so to motorists. The majority of farmers did not appear to observe any rule of the. road when driving stock. They should recognise the fact, however, that they were confined to a limited time when driving stock and also that such stock must be under proper guidance. He would suggest that those discussing his rulings and comments on eases of this nature in the future, consider the proper meaning of “proper guidance.” They hail made a lot of fuss about his decision and remarks when a man bad entered the box and said that he had deliberately obstructed a motorist, and that fact he thought Mr. -Ouglov, who was present in court, would hear out. Mr. Ongley: That is so, Your Worship. The man also said that he would continue to obstruct motorists.
The Magistrate did not make any further comment but proceeded with the business before the -Court.
