BT. •HON’, SIiR ROBERT STOUT,

The death is reported from Wellington thiss morning of the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Stout, . P.C., K.C.M.G., M.L.C. and late Chief Justice, aged 80 years. The deceased was. one of the most outstanding figures in the public life of lliis Dominion. As an educationalist, lawyer, statesman, ex-Prime Minister and Supreme Court .Judge. Upon his retirement as Chief Justice about three years ago, he was appointed to the Legislative •Chamber. He was born at Lerwick, Shetland Islands in 1844. He arrived in New Zealand in 1803 and followed a scholastic profession in Dunedin. He subsequently studied law and entered the legal profession in 1871 and was law lecturer in the Otago University from 1873-5. He was Judge of the Land Claims Court in 1877-!). ALP. for Coversham in 1875 anil was Attorney-General and Minister for Lands and. Immigration in the Grey Ministry of .1878. He was elected tor Dunedin in 1884 and .joined the Vogel-Stout Ministry becoming Premier, Attorney-General and Minister of Education. He also represented Inangaliua. and Wellington City from 181)4-7. In 18!)!) was made Chief Justice. He was Chancellor of the N.Z. University from 1003-22.
