1925-28 PARLIAMENT
HOW THE MEMBERS DISAPPEARED. RETIRED, DEFEATED, DEAD. ii is estimated that on an averingc* lb at somewhere about 3ft per cent, of members disappear from the House every three years as a result of,.death, retirements, and the votes' of electors. Glancing over the portraits of the 1925-28 Parliament, one sees many faces that are not now in the House. Death removed the Hon. R. F. Bollard while in office, and Mr. IT. IV. Urn,-who was defeated at the last general election, has since died. Sir James Parr was also in the House for a portion of the last Parliament, but he resigned his sea t to accept the office of High Commissioner for New Zealand in London. ITon-vy ■ casualties were inflicted on the last Parliament at the ballot box, while no fewer than six did not seek re-election on the completion of the term. One member of the latter company, Sir (then Mr.) Thomas Sidey, has since been given a seat in the Legislative Council, and now occupies the position of its leader. How many members from Hie last Parliament now remaining in Hie House and bow many lash general election, will disappear between now and the next Parliament, is a question one is tempted to ask when easting a glance back over the faces of those who moulded New Zealand’s political destiny between the rears 1925 and 1928.
