The following recommendation from the finance committee enmo before the Invercargill City Council Ibis evening: “That the council take into consideration the suggestion that the name of the city he changed from Invercargill to Cargill.” Councillor H. J. Maea, lister, chairman of the committee, said he knew many would oppose the change purely from conservatism. There was precedent; for the change, both near at hand and far distant, the speaker mentioning the change of Christiania to Oslo. He said that Invercargill was not a euphonious name, and understood tho name was bestowed in Dunedin as a joke during a banquet at which the superintendent, Captain Cargill, was present. The name had been put up with by Southlnnders long enough. Councillor C. .1. Brodrick considered it the most absurd suggestion he had ever hoard. “Injvercargill is a beautiful name," said Councillor T. o’Byrne, “and I should he sorry to see it changed to Cargill.” The council filially decided to delete the words “from Invercargill to Cargill” from the clause, and in this amended form it was adopted.
