A LEVEL-CROSSINGS POLICY. An intimation was received at last night’s Borough Council meeting from the District Engineer of ihe Public Works Department (Mr R. H. P. RonayiifO that an agreement had been reached between his Department, and the Railway ‘Department as to a policy Cor reducing danger at. railway crossings. The eormnnuication stated that reel oily the Highways Board and the Railway Department had decided to en-operate with a view to improving vision at railway level crossings which were situated on main or secondary highways. The terms, of the agreement arrived at- between the Board anil the Department, were as follows: —> J. Where if is necessary for the improvement of the view at a crossing to remove obstructions on railway property, the Railway Department will hear the whole cost. 2. Where it is necessary to remove obstructions for the purpose of improving the visibility of a roadway, lhe Highways Board will, in eonjunction with the local authority, provide the necessary cost. 3. In cases where it is necessary to fake private lands the Railway Department and Highways Board to bear half cost each. The Board will negotiate with the local bodies in respect to any contributions, which it thinks should he made by them. The District Engineer submitted ■a report on borough crossings and suggested the removal of a hedge mi Mrs Reader's properly in Ladys Mile and two pine trees at the racecourse crossing. The letter was received.
