REMOVAL OF WHARF TO “RUSH FLAT.”
THE Harbour Hoard at its last meeting discussed the question of I lie removal of the wharf from its present sile to “Rush Flat," a point about one mile from I lie bar entrance. 'This proposal has been dismissed freely in past years by those interested in the welfare of (lie port, the objection to such a proposal being that cargoes would require double handling and extra haulage Lo connect with the railway, and, further, that considerable expense would he incurred by the Hoard in removing its present, buildings. Fox ton, however, would not suffer in any material way as a result of such transfer. The vital point is that if continuous shipping is to he maintained —and without shipping the Hoard’s principal financial • avenue is closed —the fairway must he improved. With the wharf at “Rush Flat” this dilliciilly would he removed and, should the proposed River Hoard’s cut eventuate, it would not oulv improve the position at Hush Fiat. On the other hand, it would render the {iresent wharf useless, as the water in the channel or fairway would ho greatly diminished. To transfer the wharf to “Rush Flat.” means a considerable capital outlay, with definite prospects of increased revenue to meet the cost, while on the other hand to go on as at present will, in time, spell financial disaster. The Hoard is faced with a diflieult problem which they are tackling with commendable courage.
