BOWLING
PALMERSTON ANNEXES AINSLIE SHIELD.
Yesterday afternoon two rinks representing Palmerston North Club visited Foxton green for the purpose of contesting with the holders of the Ainslie Shield. The visiting rinks were successful in the aggregate, and had the honour and pleasure of taking % trophy back with them at the conclusion of Play. One Foxton rink had a substantial win over their opponents, but this was more than counterbalanced by Patou’s rink ,wlio also had a large margin to spare in their game. The aggregates were as follow: Palmerston North 46, Foxton 42. The result of the matches, however, was in doubt until the last bowl had been played in Mat tar’s game against Patori. The game Dickering' v. Huntley resulted in a margin of 19 points in favour of the home rink, after which Mattar and Patou had one head to play, their scoi’es on the completion of the 2()th head being Paton 36, Mattar 14. Therefore, if Mattar could measure three on the final head the aggregate would be even. When the skips went up to play Mattar lay two, and Paton not improving his position", it was left to the local skip to add the extra bowl to make the third shot. This, however, he tailed to do from an admittedly difficult position, the outcome being that lie knocked in one of his opponents’ howls, which gave Palmerston North a margin of four on the aggregate. The rinks and scores are as follow:
Palmerston North: Boon, Hansel, Goldfinch, Paton (s) 37; Robinson, Xcwtli, Christie, Mattar (s) 14. Foxton; Hinds, Howie, Walker, Huntley (s) 28; Wilson, Morris, Bayliss, Pickering (s) 9. At the ,conclusion of pi ay the President of the Foxton Club (Mr. !j. M. Thomson) extended congratulations to the winners and formally handed the shield to the winning Palmerston North skip. Mr. Paton, acknowledged the congratulations, and stated that they had greatly enjoyed the afternoon’s outing, and expressed the hope that Foxton Club would again have the opportunity of meeting his Club this season in a further matches for the shield.
A general meeting o'f members of tlie local Bowling Club was held in Hie pavilion last evening, when matters concerning finance were discussed. It was ultimately resolved that a levy of 5/- per member be made to supplement the care'takers’ wages fund, so that his services may be retained until the end of the season without further in - \olving the club’s finances. It was also decided not to accept invitations to play away during March, and to concentrate on club matches during the month. All qualifying rounds for the Thompson trophies must be completed before the 31st instant.
